Taipei-based China Airlines unveiled its new ‘futuristic’ uniforms that cabin and airport staff will don starting this August. The new uniform design is part of China Airlines’ “NexGen” (Next Generation) brand refresh campaign.

The uniforms have drawn mixed reviews following their high profile debut last week with some making fun of the design’s similarity to the Japanese cartoon Mazinger Z.

“I am designing fashion, not a uniform,” Chang said at the inauguration ceremony.

Designed by Oscar nominated costume designer William Chang, the new uniform’s for Taiwan’s largest carrier, are a fusion of a traditional Mandarin gown and modern Western fashion, according Chang.

“I am designing fashion, not a uniform,” Chang said at the inauguration ceremony.

Writing for The Design Air, an airline-industry observer, Johnny Clark writes:

“Our favourite design has to be the female white and slate look, which is by far the most elegant, however, the red and violet look for the main female cabin crews has a very iconic and instantly recognisable look.”

As for the men’s uniforms?

“The men’s duotone block jackets are very fashion forward with Michael Kors and BOSS both featuring this look in recent catwalk shows, and the addition of a red accent on the lapel helping tie them back in with the female uniforms.”
