There’s a Massive Creative Renaissance brewing, emitting from a country a lot of people would not expect & it’s on a direct course to catch the whole world by surprise. When most of us in the west think of “The Kingdom”, images of a conservative desert people, massive oil fields & the annual religious Hajj pilgrimage come to mind. Camels, sand dunes, & traditional garb. The stuff of Lawrence of Arabia, right? Wrong. Emerging from those stereotypical images however, is a generation of Saudi’s that are embarking on a massive cultural transformation. It’s as if they’ve skipped a couple levels in a video game, accelerating past expectations & leaving our outdated perceptions in the dust.
Consider that of 38.5 Million Saudis, 60% of them are under 30 years old, they all have unprecedented access to a vast trove of resources & an authentic license to create and express. All are spearheaded by the strategic Saudi Vision 2030.

This truly visionary initiative has not only empowered a whole generation of young Saudi’s, but it has impacted every sector & industry, all genuinely powered by creativity & cultural beacons such as Ithra at the heart of it. Ithra, by the way, isn’t just another cultural center. It’s more like if the Louvre, MIT Media Lab, & TED Talks all mixed into one epiphany of a building, right smack in the middle of the desert. A crucible of innovation, if you will.
From lofty mega-projects such as “The Line” by NEOM, a self sufficient smart city that has lofty aims to become the benchmark for sustainable living (imagine Blade Runner 2049, but eco-friendly), to MDLBEAST a music festival in the middle of desert that attracted 130,000 fans and was headlined by the likes of Rick Ross, Steve Aoki & Korean DJ Peggy Gou. Picture Coachella, but with sand instead of grass & the occasional camel in the VIP section. From Cinemas opening in Riyadh to Jeddah, to Coachella’s DESERT X now dubbed “Desert X AlUla” featuring a vast array of curators & artists from across the Kingdom & the globe, all using the desert as their collective canvas.

Not only is the country quickly becoming the centre of a thriving creative industry, but it’s also witnessing the rise of a new class of Creative Saudis. They’re not just participating in the global creative conversation – they’re leading it, reshaping it, & adding their unique flavor to the mix. It’s as if they’ve been waiting in the wings all this time, and now they’re stepping into the spotlight with a flourish that’s making the rest of the world sit up & take notice.
Filmmakers, such as @meshalaljaser who’s whimsical, surreal & quirky films on his YouTube channel garnered over 680 million views (that’s more than the population of North America, folks), one of his more known films “Arabian Alien” starring rising young star @Warchieff was featured in Sundance. Because nothing says “we’ve arrived” quite like debuting at the mecca of independent cinema, right?

Musicians, like @theycallmejara the 23 year old female rapper behind the hit single “966” that was released on national Saudi Day. She’s not just breaking the mold, she’s shattering it & rebuilding it in her own image. Then there’s @desertfish_ who’s defining & redefining the Saudi Arabian Techno scene. Imagine if Daft Punk decided to set up shop in Riyadh – that’s the kind of vibe we’re talking about here.

The cultural paradigm shift happening in the Saudi Kingdom is simply epic in magnitude. A strategic plan to diversify & sustain the future of a nation beyond fossil fuels, has positively galvanized an entire people to embrace creativity & invest in it. It’s as if the entire country collectively decided to pivot from “black gold” to “creative gold” – and they’re striking it rich in ways that go far beyond mere economics.
“The cultural paradigm shift happening in the Saudi Kingdom is simply epic in magnitude…. Simply put, The Future belongs to Dreamers & it’s very inspiring to witness the Saudi Arabians work creatively towards the World of Tomorrow. They’re not just reimagining their future – they’re actively creating it, one brushstroke, beat, or stitch at a time.”
Fast Company reports that cultural & creative industries in Saudi (CCI) generate approximately $15 billion per year, with a GDP that is growing more than 13% annually, all leading to a Top spot as the world’s fastest growing large economy according to The Economist Intelligence EIU. That’s not just growth – that’s hypergrowth. Imagine a time-lapse video of a desert blooming into a lush oasis, except instead of flowers, it’s sprouting art galleries, music studios, & fashion houses.
Simply put, The Future belongs to Dreamers & it’s very inspiring to witness the Saudi Arabians work creatively towards the World of Tomorrow. They’re not just reimagining their future – they’re actively creating it, one brushstroke, beat, or stitch at a time. And the rest of us? We’re lucky enough to have front-row seats to this spectacular show.
So grab your popcorn (or your Tamr, if you want to really keep it authentic), because this creative renaissance is just getting started. The curtain’s up, the stage is set, and Saudi Arabia is ready to dazzle the world.
Ya hala!
